Pertamina-Siemens Energy Collaborate for Sustainable Energy Transition in Indonesia

In a groundbreaking move for the energy sector, PT Pertamina (Persero) has partnered with Siemens Energy to realize safe and affordable sustainable energy in Indonesia. The collaboration was solidified through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on discussing business opportunities and collaboration potential for accelerating technology on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, in Jakarta.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

The MoU was signed by Pertamina’s Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development, Salyadi Saputra, and Thorbjörn Fors, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Siemens Energy Asia Pacific. Salyadi emphasized that this partnership signifies both companies’ commitment to sustainability, innovation, and energy progress.

“This MoU between Pertamina and Siemens Energy marks a significant step towards proactive and visionary energy leadership. This collaboration goes beyond a mere strategic alliance; it is a fusion of expertise, resources, and collective efforts to address the energy trilemma and ensure safe, sustainable, and affordable energy for not only the present but also future generations,” expressed Salyadi during the signing ceremony.

Transformative Collaboration for Energy Transition

Salyadi highlighted that this collaboration exemplifies the synergy between energy and technology companies to drive technology and innovation while creating added value for stakeholders, communities, and the environment.

“We will leverage the potential of new renewable resources as a step towards energy transition. Simultaneously, we aim to boost economic growth,” Salyadi explained.

Siemens Energy echoed similar sentiments, stating that both companies share a vision to become sustainable entities and drive energy transition in Indonesia.

“Indonesia holds the potential to lead the energy transition, and our partnership with Pertamina serves as the foundation for building a sustainable future for Indonesia. Siemens Energy is not just a technology provider, but we are partners in shaping a new energy landscape grounded in tradition and progress,” Thorbjörn emphasized.

Three Key Programs to Drive Sustainable Energy

The MoU outlines three main programs to be implemented. Firstly, Power-to-X, an innovative technology to introduce new methods in producing and storing renewable energy.

Secondly, the utilization of upstream waste water heat energy. This program focuses on reusing heat from the waste water process to enhance energy efficiency and sustainability.

Oki Muraza, SVP Research & Technology Innovation at Pertamina, emphasized that this energy utilization program marks a significant leap. By harnessing advanced heat utilization technology from Siemens Energy, Pertamina can increase upstream operational efficiency while simultaneously reducing carbon footprint.

Thirdly, the Decarbonization of the Maritime Sector aims to monitor and manage carbon emissions in the maritime industry. This program is crucial as the maritime industry plays a vital role in global trade and faces challenges in emission reduction.

Driving National Energy Resilience and Global Environmental Contributions

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina, added that the collaboration with various business partners, government agencies, and academia is essential for developing sustainable energy potential and emission decarbonization efforts.

This collaboration is believed to support Pertamina’s role in maintaining national energy resilience while working towards achieving the Indonesian Government’s Net Zero Emission target. Initiatives in the energy and sustainability realms are crucial as Indonesia strives to meet international environmental standards and contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.
