Indonesia’s Nationwide Distribution of 124,000 FMD Vaccine Doses

In a crucial effort to combat the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) among livestock, the Indonesian government has taken a proactive step by distributing 124,225 doses of the FMD vaccine in the first phase of distribution. This initiative aims to safeguard the health and well-being of the nation’s livestock population and ensure food security.

Director General’s Strategic Planning

Director General of Livestock and Animal Health, Agung Suganda, shared insights into the strategic planning behind this distribution. With a total of 4 million doses earmarked for 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture has carefully allocated these vaccines to 25 provinces with reported FMD cases. The distribution is being carried out in stages to ensure effective coverage and response to the pressing need.

Phased Distribution for Maximum Impact

The distribution of vaccines is meticulously planned, with a phased approach in place. Suganda revealed that 400,000 doses are set to be distributed in January, followed by 1.2 million doses in February, and another 400,000 doses in March. Additionally, 2 million doses are reserved for the second vaccination period scheduled from July to September 2025. This systematic approach underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the FMD outbreak comprehensively.

Local Production and Impact

To further bolster the vaccination drive, the Ministry of Agriculture allocated a budget for procuring vaccines produced locally by the Central Veterinary Drug Laboratory (Pusvetma) in December 2024. The distribution of 51,200 donated doses to eight provinces and an additional 65,000 doses across various regions underscores the collaborative effort to combat FMD effectively.

Amidst the challenges posed by the FMD outbreak, the ministry’s emphasis on distributing locally made vaccines not only safeguards livestock health but also enhances productivity and upholds food security. This strategic initiative is a testament to Indonesia’s commitment to protecting its agricultural sector and ensuring sustainable livestock management practices.

The nationwide distribution of 124,225 FMD vaccine doses marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s fight against the disease, reflecting a proactive and targeted approach to safeguarding the nation’s livestock population. Through strategic planning, phased distribution, and emphasis on local production, the government is making strides towards mitigating the impact of FMD and strengthening the agricultural sector’s resilience.
