Improving Student Admission Process Urged by MPR Deputy Speaker

Jakarta – Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Lestari Moerdijat, is calling for significant improvements to be made to the student admission process in schools to enhance the quality of education. In a statement received on Monday, Moerdijat emphasized the need for a well-prepared student admission process ahead of the new academic year, stressing that it must surpass previous years’ standards.

Challenges in Student Admissions

Moerdijat highlighted recurring problems during student admissions, including an increasing number of parents changing their family card addresses to secure admission for their children in desired schools. She also pointed out the issues arising from the uneven distribution of public schools, leading to prospective students being unable to enroll in schools within their zoning radius. Additionally, some schools face a shortage of new students, which can result in dishonest practices like gaining admission through bribery.

Transparency and Accountability

To address these issues, the MPR deputy speaker urged all stakeholders at the central and regional levels to conduct student admissions in a more transparent manner. Emphasizing the importance of continuously improving educational services, Moerdijat stressed the need for a better learning process for the nation’s children.

Government Initiatives

In related developments, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti revealed that the ministry has proposed a new student admission scheme to President Prabowo Subianto. Mu’ti expressed hope for prompt agreement on the new scheme to allow sufficient time for disseminating information to schools and parents.

The Way Forward

As the government works towards enhancing the student admission process, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize transparency and accountability to ensure fair access to quality education for all students. By addressing the challenges in student admissions, stakeholders can contribute to creating a more equitable and efficient educational system for the benefit of the nation’s youth and future generations.
