Empowering Youth to Preserve Marine Ecosystems with Ocean LiteraSEA Program

Jakarta, 7 November 2024 – On the occasion of Youth Pledge Day, PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) launched the Ocean LiteraSEA program at the Maritime Museum in Jakarta. This program, part of the BerSEAnergi initiative for the Sea, underscores PIS’s commitment to supporting marine education in line with the global vision of the Ocean Decade proclaimed by the United Nations. The event was attended by 100 elementary school students from coastal areas in Jakarta, featuring various educational activities, including museum exploration and a Children’s Theater show themed on marine ecosystem conservation. PIS also introduced the Seanergy Quartet Card, an educational card for interactive learning that will be distributed to 11 schools from Sumatra to Sulawesi.

Creating a Brighter Future Through Ocean LiteraSEA

“This program is our concrete commitment to supporting marine education. We, in collaboration with various parties, aim to ensure that the younger generation, especially children in coastal areas, have a deep understanding of the importance of preserving the ocean for the future,” said Acting Corporate Secretary of PIS, Vega Pita. The Head of the Maritime Museum Management Unit in Jakarta, Mrs. Mis’ari, also welcomed this program positively as part of marine education efforts for the youth. Aligning with Sustainable Development Goals

The BerSEAnergi for the Sea program, which oversees Ocean LiteraSEA, is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly goal 4 on quality education and goal 14 on marine ecosystem preservation. In the previous year, this program benefited more than 5,000 students in 49 schools across Indonesia, including the construction and renovation of 9 school libraries. Moving forward, PIS is committed to expanding the reach of the Ocean LiteraSEA program by targeting more schools in Indonesia’s coastal areas. In addition to educational activities, the program will also be enriched with various marine environmental conservation initiatives such as beach clean-ups, mangrove planting, and empowering coastal communities, as part of comprehensive efforts to sustainably preserve Indonesia’s maritime ecosystem.
