In a bustling city like Jakarta, the pursuit of sustainable innovation in energy, the environment, and community empowerment is not just a goal but a way of life for Badak LNG, a subsidiary of Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding. With a steadfast commitment to fostering a sustainable LNG industry that is environmentally friendly and positively impacts local communities, Badak LNG has been making significant strides in the realm of sustainability.
In 2024, Badak LNG achieved a remarkable feat by optimizing energy efficiency at its refinery, leading to a substantial decrease in energy consumption by a staggering 218,207 GigaJoules, a reduction in water usage by 5,198 m3, and a cut in emissions by 4,207 tons of CO2 eq. These impressive numbers underscore the company’s dedication to reducing its environmental footprint while enhancing operational efficiency.
Empowering Coastal Communities
Beyond the realm of energy conservation, Badak LNG has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative known as Jaka Samudra, which translates to the Modern Eco-friendly Aquaculture Floating System Network. This innovative program involves the deployment of modern floating structures designed to provide a sustainable livelihood for coastal communities, particularly fishermen in the village of Tihi-Tihi, enabling them to earn a living even in inclement weather conditions.
The Jaka Samudra program harnesses non-hazardous waste materials such as Fiber-reinforced Polymer (FRP) pipes and polyurethane to create flotation devices for the floating structures. By utilizing these non-hazardous waste materials, the floating structures can last up to 40 years, significantly outperforming conventional flotation devices. Equipped with smart sensors to detect leaks, structural tilts, and solar panels for energy supply, these modern floating structures offer a comprehensive solution for sustainable aquaculture practices.
The impact of the Jaka Samudra program has been profound, with the residents of Tihi-Tihi village now able to establish floating restaurants and marine tourism ventures that have led to a substantial increase in income. The monthly fish catch revenue has surged to Rp9 million, while restaurant earnings have reached Rp119 million, transforming the economic landscape of the community.
Award-Winning Sustainability
The environmental benefits of these innovations are equally impressive, with a notable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, including a yearly decrease of 0.26 tons of CO2eq from the utilization of FRP waste. These initiatives have not gone unnoticed, as Badak LNG recently clinched its 14th consecutive PROPER Gold award from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, underscoring its unwavering commitment to environmental management and community empowerment.
The prestigious PROPER Gold award, presented by Minister of Environment and Forestry Hanif Faisol Nurofiq at Sasono Langen Budoyo, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta on Monday (24/02/2025), is a testament to Badak LNG’s exceptional performance in exceeding environmental management and community empowerment standards. The accolades did not stop there, as Badak LNG’s President Director & CEO, Achmad Khoiruddin, was also honored with the Green Leadership award, recognizing his exemplary leadership in driving sustainable environmental policies and innovations.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Achmad Khoiruddin emphasized the company’s commitment to environmental and social contributions, highlighting the importance of sustainable development and waste optimization for community benefit. “This award is a testament to the company’s dedication to enhancing the surrounding community and maximizing the reuse of generated waste,” he remarked, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainable practices.
Looking ahead, Achmad Khoiruddin expressed hope for continued success and urged stakeholders and employees to strive for ongoing improvement in environmental preservation and community welfare. “Thank you to all stakeholders and the dedicated team at Badak LNG for their hard work and dedication in achieving the 14th PROPER Gold award and maintaining this streak of success. The attainment of the 14th PROPER Gold award serves as a tangible manifestation of the company’s dedication to sustainable practices, climate change mitigation, and the harmonious balance between energy industry, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility, setting the stage for a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
