Security Forces Ensure Peaceful Pro-Palestine Protest Outside US Embassy
In a show of solidarity with Palestine, nearly 1,994 security personnel were deployed to oversee a pro-Palestine protest in front of the US Embassy in Jakarta on Sunday (26/1/2025). The joint forces, comprising members from the Jakarta Metro Police, Jakarta Central Metro Police, Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), Jakarta Provincial Government, and related agencies, were strategically positioned around the US Embassy to ensure the safety and security of all involved.
Strategic Deployment and Traffic Management
Emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace during the protest, Jakarta Central Metro Police Chief, Commissioner Pol Susatyo Purnomo Condro, explained the rationale behind the extensive security measures. “In order to secure the expression of opinions during today’s Pro-Palestine protest, we have engaged 1,994 personnel,” he informed reporters. These security personnel were strategically placed at various points surrounding the US Embassy.
To accommodate the potential influx of protesters and ensure the smooth flow of traffic, Commissioner Susatyo highlighted the situational nature of traffic diversions. Traffic engineering measures would be adjusted based on real-time developments and the evolving dynamics of the situation. “If the number of protesters is minimal, traffic will proceed as usual. However, if there is a significant increase in the crowd around the US Embassy leading to heightened tensions, traffic on Jl. Merdeka Selatan will be redirected,” he stated.
Community Cooperation and Peaceful Protest Guidelines
Encouraging cooperation from residents in the vicinity of the National Monument (Monas), Commissioner Susatyo advised them to seek alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of the security personnel maintaining a non-confrontational approach, prioritizing negotiation, humane service delivery, and the preservation of peace and safety.
The field coordinators (korlap) and speakers were reminded to deliver their speeches in a respectful and non-provocative manner. “Express your opinions peacefully, refrain from imposing your will, avoid chaos, and respect the other road users passing in front of the US Embassy,” he urged. It was underscored that none of the security personnel were armed, demonstrating respect for the protesters’ right to express their opinions in a dignified and professional manner.
Endearing Humanitarian Approach
Above all, the message conveyed by Commissioner Susatyo was one of empathy and compassion. He reiterated the commitment of the security forces to uphold the principles of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, while also ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants. “Our personnel are not carrying firearms. Let us respect and value our fellow citizens who will be voicing their opinions publicly with humanity and professionalism,” he asserted.
As the pro-Palestine protest unfolded, the presence of the security forces served as a reassuring reminder of their dedication to facilitating a peaceful and orderly demonstration. Through effective communication, strategic planning, and a compassionate approach, the security personnel played a pivotal role in safeguarding the rights and safety of those participating in the protest.
