Nusantara Development Progress on Track for New Capital Status, Confirms MPR Chair

Jakarta—The ambitious project of developing Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara, is steadily moving forward, reassured by the chairperson of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Ahmad Muzani. In a recent statement, Muzani expressed confidence in the progress made towards establishing Nusantara as the nation’s governmental hub by 2028. The government’s substantial allocation of Rp48.8 trillion (approximately US$2.98 billion) has been earmarked to propel the development of this groundbreaking new capital.

Significant Investments to Drive Nusantara’s Growth

President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to channel the allocated funds towards completing essential infrastructures like the legislative and judiciary complexes, bolstering the city’s supporting ecosystem, and initiating the second phase of Nusantara City reflects a strategic approach to advancing the project. Muzani emphasized that this development trajectory aims to dispel any lingering uncertainties among potential investors regarding the funding of Nusantara’s growth. Moreover, he expressed optimism that Nusantara has the potential to emerge as a key economic center in the region.

Nusantara: A Nexus of Governance and Civilization

Beyond serving as a governmental and political nucleus, Nusantara is envisioned as a crucible of civilization where pivotal decisions are deliberated and enacted. Muzani underscored the significance of cultivating a new societal fabric within Nusantara—a place that symbolizes a fresh beginning, a new ethos, and a convergence of diverse perspectives. This transformative vision seeks to position Nusantara as an esteemed focal point for governance, politics, and cultural exchange in the archipelago.

Strategic Infusion of Resources Fuels Nusantara’s Evolution

Basuki Hadimuljono, the head of the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN), detailed the strategic infusion of resources in the initial phase (2022–2024) to underpin the city’s growth. A substantial sum of Rp89 trillion from the state budget was allocated to construct critical infrastructures such as toll roads, residential towers, sanitation facilities, and administrative offices. Additionally, private-sector investments totaling Rp58.41 trillion have been secured as of September 2024, further solidifying the foundation for Nusantara’s development.

Looking Ahead: Nusantara’s Journey Towards Transformation

As Nusantara embarks on its transformative journey towards becoming Indonesia’s new capital, the resolute commitment of key stakeholders, coupled with strategic investments and visionary leadership, are driving the project forward. The fusion of governmental functionality, economic vitality, and cultural richness within Nusantara heralds a new chapter in Indonesia’s narrative—one that promises to redefine the nation’s landscape and shape its future trajectory.
