Press Council Introduces AI Guidelines for Journalism in Indonesia
In a groundbreaking move, Indonesia’s Press Council unveiled a comprehensive guideline on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalistic practices. This initiative, spearheaded by Press Council Chairperson Ninik Rahayu, aims to ensure the ethical and transparent integration of AI technology in journalism in the midst of rapid technological advancements.
Development of the Guideline
The process of formulating this crucial guideline commenced in April 2024, with the Press Council assembling a task force consisting of internal members, media representatives, and a dedicated drafting team. The goal was to create a framework that would streamline journalistic processes, enhance work efficiency, and uphold the core values of journalism in the digital age.
Feedback and Testing
During the preparation phase, invaluable feedback was solicited from media organizations already leveraging AI in their reporting, as well as from industry experts. Furthermore, the guideline underwent a rigorous public testing phase, incorporating insights from stakeholders, including the Supreme Court, to ensure its relevance and effectiveness.
Key Provisions of the Guideline
Comprising eight chapters and ten articles, the guideline covers a wide array of aspects, including general provisions, basic principles, technological standards, publication guidelines, commercialization ethics, data protection, dispute resolution mechanisms, and a conclusive section. Notably, one article emphasizes the indispensable role of human supervision in the use of AI for journalistic content creation.
AI as a Supportive Tool in Journalism
The Indonesian Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) reiterated that while AI can enhance journalistic processes, it cannot replace the fundamental role of human journalists. Chairperson Nany Afrida underscored that AI technology should be viewed as a supportive tool rather than the cornerstone of journalism, emphasizing the enduring importance of human judgment and ethical practices in news reporting.
