Effective Measures for High Inflation Regions: Minister’s Request
Jakarta – Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian is calling on regional governments in areas with high inflation rates to take immediate control measures. This urgent appeal was made during the Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting chaired by Minister Karnavian in Jakarta on Monday.
The Minister highlighted several provinces grappling with high inflation rates, including Papua Pegunungan, Central Papua, West Papua, Bali, Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau Islands, South Kalimantan, Banten, and Southwest Papua. While only Papua Pegunungan exceeds the target inflation rate of 3.5 percent, Minister Karnavian emphasized the importance of addressing this issue promptly.
Provinces and Districts Affected by High Inflation
At the district level, areas such as Jayawijaya, Mimika, South Sorong, Labuhanbatu, Meulaboh, Tanah Laut, Banggai, Berau, Sikka, and Indragiri Hilir have reported alarming inflation rates. Similarly, cities like Gunungsitoli, Sibolga, Pematangsiantar, Lhokseumawe, Denpasar, Sukabumi, Padangsidimpuan, Dumai, Serang, and Bima are experiencing significant inflationary pressures.
Root Causes and Solutions
To combat high inflation, Minister Karnavian stressed the importance of identifying the root causes, such as supply shortages or disruptions in commodity distribution. Regional governments have been urged to conduct thorough investigations to pinpoint the underlying issues fueling inflation.
Furthermore, the Minister proposed a planting movement to boost commodity production centers across the country. This initiative aims to address the rising prices of essential commodities like red chilies, bird’s eye chilies, and shallots. Minister Karnavian underscored the need to diversify production centers for shallots, currently concentrated in Brebes district, Central Java, to mitigate inflationary pressures.
Presidential Call to Action
President Joko Widodo has echoed Minister Karnavian’s sentiments, urging all regions to establish dedicated inflation control teams. While not all districts and cities have surpassed the national inflation target, vigilance remains crucial in curbing inflationary trends.
In conclusion, Minister Karnavian’s plea for proactive measures and the President’s call to action underscore the urgency of addressing high inflation in affected regions. By implementing targeted control measures and bolstering commodity production, regional governments can effectively combat inflation and safeguard economic stability.
