Stoking Economic Growth Through Downstreaming: Task Force Recommendations

Jakarta – In a bid to drive economic growth and boost national energy resilience, the Head of the downstreaming acceleration and national energy resilience task force, Bahlil Lahadalia, emphasized the importance of downstreaming during the task force’s inaugural meeting on Friday.

President’s Vision for Economic Growth

During the meeting, Lahadalia, who also serves as the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, revealed that strategic measures have been devised by the ministry to fulfill President Prabowo Subianto’s directives to enhance investment and realization.

“The President’s vision is for downstreaming to serve as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and the creation of added value, with a specific emphasis on ensuring that this added value is generated within Indonesia,” Lahadalia stated during a press briefing.

Domestic Financing for Downstreaming

Moreover, Lahadalia underscored the necessity for downstreaming financing to be conducted domestically, aligning with the President’s guidance.

“To address concerns about foreign entities benefiting more from Indonesia, the President has instructed us to develop downstreaming financing mechanisms that are rooted within the country,” Lahadalia explained.

Five-Year Plan for Downstreaming

Looking ahead, Lahadalia revealed that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will serve as the headquarters for the downstreaming task force for the next five years.

“For the next five years, the ministry will be our base of operations until further directives are received from the President,” Lahadalia affirmed.

The establishment of the task force, comprising key ministers and institutional leaders, was formalized by President Prabowo through the issuance of Presidential Decree Number 1 of 2025. Under Article 2 of the decree, the task force operates under the President’s authority and reports directly to him.

Targeting sectors such as minerals and coal, oil and gas, agriculture, forestry, and maritime and fisheries, the downstreaming acceleration initiative aims to elevate the value of domestically produced commodities, in line with the decree’s provisions.

As the task force sets its sights on driving economic growth through downstreaming, Lahadalia’s leadership and the President’s strategic vision are poised to shape Indonesia’s economic landscape in the coming years.
