Boosting Indonesia’s Fisheries Exports to the US Through Collaboration

Jakarta – The Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) in Indonesia is taking significant steps to enhance the country’s fisheries exports to the United States through strategic collaborations with international partners. This initiative aims to not only expand the market for high-quality Indonesian fish but also to elevate Indonesia’s position in the global fisheries industry.

Collaborating for Success

During the launch of the “Shaping Indonesia Fisheries Investment Through SelectUSA” program in Jakarta, Head of the Ministry’s Marine and Fisheries Product Quality Supervision and Control Agency, Ishartini, highlighted the importance of this joint effort. By partnering with the US embassy, the Ministry aims to introduce Indonesian fisheries business actors to the “SelectUSA” program. This program facilitates direct business networking opportunities with state authorities in the US, providing valuable insights into demand, regulations, policy incentives, tax benefits, and licensing requirements for Indonesian exporters.

Expanding Market Access

Indonesia’s reputation for implementing stringent fisheries product quality assurance standards has garnered international recognition, particularly from the US. Currently, over 243 fish processing units in Indonesia are registered with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), enabling them to export their products to the US market. With the US being a significant consumer of seafood, averaging 19.8 pounds per capita annually, the demand for fisheries products continues to grow steadily.

Strengthening Partnerships

The Director General of Marine and Fisheries Competitiveness Strengthening, Budi Sulistiyo, emphasized the strategic importance of the US as the primary destination for Indonesian fishery exports, totaling US$1.72 billion as of November 2024. Shrimp, crab, tuna, skipjack, and mackerel tuna are among the top export commodities from Indonesia to the US, with shrimp being the most sought-after product by American consumers.

Building a Sustainable Future

As Indonesia looks to expand market access and enhance cooperation in technology, innovation, and supply chain management within the fisheries sector, the SelectUSA program offers a promising opportunity for Indonesian companies. By fostering inclusive and sustainable investment practices, Indonesia aims to solidify its position as a key player in the global fisheries market.

In conclusion, the collaborative efforts between Indonesia and the US underscore the shared commitment to advancing the fisheries industry, promoting economic growth, and fostering sustainable practices for the benefit of both nations. Through strategic partnerships and mutual cooperation, the future of Indonesia’s fisheries exports to the US appears brighter than ever before.
