Boosting Rubber Farmers to Implement Agroforestry

In the heart of Pagar Dewa, a strategic initiative is taking root among farmers. The Wanatani Program, more commonly known as agroforestry, is gaining traction in this village as a means to optimize land undergoing rubber rejuvenation.

Strategic Collaboration

This program stands out as a flagship endeavor involving members of the Padetra Artomulyo Cooperative and the Siaga Farmer Group. Both entities are under the mentorship of PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN) – Gas Compressor Station Pagardewa.

Agroforestry is a cultivation technique that combines trees with agricultural crops in a single plot. In Pagar Dewa, this program is being applied to land undergoing rubber rejuvenation.

Diversification and Success

By utilizing this land, farmers can not only tap rubber but also generate additional income from other crops. Under the Wanatani program, farmers have planted watermelon and chili on a 1.5-hectare plot. Watermelon varieties chosen include Red Beauty (Inul) with key types being Bonita and Mardi.

The Inul watermelon is known for its small, elongated shape and sweet taste. Farmers also grow seedless watermelon for variety.

At present, the watermelon cultivation has entered its second phase. During the initial harvest, farmers yielded 10 tons of watermelon, with 6 tons distributed to the Jakarta market.

During the second harvest on August 12, 2024, a yield of 7 tons was obtained, with expectations for continued success.

Support and Commitment

Fajriyah Usman, Secretary of PGN, emphasizes the company’s backing of empowerment programs like Wanatani as part of PGN’s commitment to positively impact communities.

PGN has actively engaged in various initiatives focusing on enhancing farmer welfare and sustainable natural resource management.

“It is our responsibility at PGN to contribute to programs supporting community welfare, including Wanatani activities,” stated Fajriyah.

The Wanatani Program aims to boost rubber farmer income through income source diversification and optimizing plantation land benefits. This aligns with the sustainability principles advocated by the Global Platform of Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR), a global initiative promoting sustainable natural rubber production. PGN will continue to support every step towards Wanatani program success.

Farmer’s Gratitude

On a personal note, Tugiwan Aliestono, a rubber farmer involved in the Wanatani program, expresses gratitude and appreciation for PGN’s support at the Gas Compressor Station Pagardewa.

“We are very thankful for the assistance provided by PGN in this Wanatani program. This program not only helps us utilize land more effectively but also provides income for our families,” shared Tugiwan.
