Illegal Detention of Uzbek Business Leader: Ulugbek Shadmanov Case
New York–(ANTARA/Business Wire)– On December 10, 2024, Ulugbek Shadmanov, a prominent Uzbek business leader, was illegally detained in Dubai and later extradited to Tashkent to face unspecified charges. Marc Agnifilo, the Founding Partner of Agnifilo Intrater LLP, is serving as U.S.-based counsel for Mr. Shadmanov. The United Arab Emirates held him in custody for 30 days, during which he was denied all communication, including with his legal counsel.
The Call for Justice and Human Rights
Marc Agnifilo has spoken out against what he calls a blatant political prosecution by authorities in Uzbekistan. Mr. Shadmanov has been charged with illegally crossing the border, an offense that typically does not result in incarceration. Despite this, he has been detained and denied any contact with the outside world, including his legal counsel.
Agnifilo emphasizes that the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, also known as the Nelson Mandela Rules, clearly state that prisoners have the right to access legal advice and communicate privately with their legal counsel. He points out that this fundamental right is also enshrined in Principle 18 of the UN Body of Principles for the Protection of All Persons under Any Form of Detention or Imprisonment.
An Absence of Legal Process
Since Mr. Shadmanov’s detention in Dubai, Agnifilo highlights a complete absence of legal process. His incarceration and extradition are deemed inconsistent with the laws of both Uzbekistan and the U.A.E. There are concerns that he will remain a political prisoner in Uzbekistan, subjected to inhumane treatment and interrogated without counsel, in blatant violation of his rights.
Call to Action
Agnifilo urges the international community to pay attention to this grave injustice to ensure that Mr. Shadmanov’s rights are upheld and he receives fair and just treatment.
As we read about the plight of Ulugbek Shadmanov, it’s essential to remember the real human impact of political injustices. Behind every headline is a person, a family, and a community affected by these actions. Put yourself in Mr. Shadmanov’s shoes for a moment – imagine being detained, isolated from the world, and facing uncertain charges without being able to defend yourself properly. It’s a terrifying thought that highlights the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring that justice prevails for all individuals, regardless of their status or background.
In a world where power dynamics often overshadow the rights of individuals, it’s crucial to stand up against injustice and advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. We can all play a part in promoting a fair and just society by raising awareness, supporting organizations that fight for human rights, and holding governments and authorities accountable for their actions. Let’s remember the human faces behind the headlines and work towards a world where justice and compassion prevail for all.
