The eruption of Mount Ibu in West Halmahera, North Maluku, has prompted urgent action from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). A specialized team has been deployed to provide essential assistance and prepare for potential impacts caused by the volcanic activity. The team’s primary focus is on emergency response and anticipating the aftermath of the eruption to minimize harm to the local community.

Team Deployment and Responsibilities

The BNPB team, led by Abdul Muhari, will depart from Jakarta to West Halmahera to support the district government in their emergency response efforts. Their responsibilities include setting up evacuation facilities, mapping vulnerable and safe zones for the community, and ensuring early warning equipment is in place to alert residents about potential cold lava floods from Mount Ibu’s crater. Every possible measure will be taken to mitigate the disaster’s impact on the local population.

Volcanic Activity and Status Update

The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources raised Mount Ibu’s status to Level IV, the highest level, on Wednesday afternoon. This decision was based on a significant increase in volcanic activity observed from January 1–14, 2025. The observation post in Gam Ici village noted an average of 70 eruptions per day during this period, with the eruption column reaching heights of up to 4 kilometers. Various types of earthquakes, including eruption, avalanche, gust, shallow volcanic, deep volcanic, and local tectonic earthquakes, were recorded, indicating heightened volcanic activity.

Preparedness and Mitigation Efforts

In light of the escalating situation at Mount Ibu, it is crucial to reinforce mitigation and preparedness measures to address potential disaster threats effectively. The BNPB’s swift response and proactive approach to the eruption demonstrate the importance of being well-prepared for natural disasters. Collaborative efforts between government agencies, local authorities, and communities are essential to ensure a coordinated and efficient response to such emergencies.

As we monitor the developments at Mount Ibu, let us reflect on the importance of disaster preparedness and the need to prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals in vulnerable areas. By staying informed, vigilant, and united in our response efforts, we can effectively navigate through challenging times and protect our communities from harm. Let us stand together in solidarity and support those affected by natural disasters, offering a helping hand in their time of need.
