Developing a 1,800-Hectare Protected Area in Nusantara: OIKN and BOSF Collaboration
Penajam Paser Utara, E. Kalima (ANTARA) – In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) is joining forces with the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) to create a protected area in Samboja Lestari, located in the Nusantara capital city, East Kalimantan.
Key Details
The protected area in Nusantara city, one of seven planning areas, is situated in Simpang Samboja and is currently undergoing development, as stated by OIKN chief Basuki Hadimuljono in a recent announcement. This initiative is part of a reforestation project encompassing 1,800 hectares of land.
Ongoing Collaboration
The BOSF has already made significant strides in reforesting the Samboja Lestari area, which was previously a reed field. As a result, OIKN is optimistic about its partnership with BOSF to transform Nusantara into a forest city—a long-term endeavor slated for completion within 20 years.
Hadimuljono emphasized that the protected area will serve as the cornerstone of Nusantara’s development. Together with BOSF, they are engaged in collaborative efforts focused on reforestation and animal reintroduction to facilitate the city’s construction process.
Environmental Conservation
According to BOSF director Aldrianto Priadjati, Samboja Lestari has been designated as a city jungle, a protected area playing a crucial role in Nusantara’s ecosystem preservation. By partnering with the Ministry of Forestry, BOSF has successfully rehabilitated the land in Samboja Lestari, transforming it from reed fields into biodiverse secondary forests.
The rehabilitation efforts in Samboja Lestari, home to 113 orangutans and 76 sun bears, underscore BOSF’s dedication to supporting Nusantara’s evolution into a forest city. This innovative concept not only upholds ecological functions but also provides a habitat for endemic wildlife species on the island of Kalimantan.
Future Outlook
The vision of a forest city in Nusantara will foster collaboration among stakeholders to promote the sustainable and eco-friendly development of Indonesia’s new capital. With a focus on environmental conservation and biodiversity preservation, this initiative marks a significant step towards creating a harmonious balance between urbanization and nature.
As we witness the transformation of Samboja Lestari into a thriving ecosystem, let us reflect on the importance of safeguarding our natural heritage for future generations. Together, we can pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future for all.
