Government Initiative to Leverage 1,332 Cooperatives for Free Meals Program
In a groundbreaking move to support the Free Nutritious Meals program, the government has enlisted the help of 1,332 cooperatives in the production sector across the country. This initiative aims to enhance the supply chain for the program and provide additional value to the community in the long run.
Deputy Minister’s Confirmation and Ministry’s Ongoing Efforts
Deputy Minister of Cooperatives, Ferry Juliantono, made the announcement at An-Nur 2 Islamic Boarding School in Malang, East Java, on Friday. He emphasized the importance of increasing the business activities of cooperatives through their involvement in the free meals program.
The Ministry of Cooperatives is actively working to streamline the ecosystem for cooperatives’ participation in supplying raw materials for the program. They are currently identifying potential locations to establish kitchens for food distribution to schools in collaboration with the National Nutrition Agency (BGN). Juliantono highlighted the provision of a prototype kitchen in Jakarta as a model for future setups in East Java.
Operational Scheme Development and Budget Allocation
Destry Anna Sari, Deputy for cooperatives’ talent and competitiveness development at the ministry, assured that an operational scheme will be devised to optimize the raw material supply from the 1,332 cooperatives. This strategic approach is aimed at ensuring efficient and effective support for the program.
The Free Nutritious Meals program, officially launched earlier this week, is part of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s agenda for their 2024–2029 term. A substantial budget of Rp71 trillion (almost US$4.4 billion) has been earmarked for the program, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing nutritional needs across the nation.
Looking Ahead: Enhancing Food Security and Community Welfare
As discussions continue on expanding the program’s reach and operational aspects, the government remains steadfast in its mission to involve cooperatives in promoting food security and enhancing community welfare. The establishment of the BGN signifies a significant step towards realizing these objectives and fostering sustainable development nationwide.
Through collaborative efforts and strategic partnerships, the government aims to leverage the collective strength of cooperatives to meet the nutritional requirements of communities and build a healthier, more prosperous future for all.
