Prioritizing Analysis-Based Weather Modification for Disaster Preparedness: BNPB
Jakarta – The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is ramping up its efforts to prioritize weather modification operations based on comprehensive analysis to enhance disaster preparedness in various regions. The head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center of the BNPB, Abdul Muhari, emphasized the effectiveness of these operations in controlling rain intensity.
Enhanced Disaster Preparedness
Muhari highlighted the positive outcomes of weather modification operations conducted in December 2024 and January 2025 in Java Island. These operations significantly reduced rain intensity and the potential for hydrometeorological disasters in the affected areas. According to BNPB’s monitoring, regions like Central Java and West Java saw a substantial decrease of 60–70 percent in daily rain intensity post the weather modification efforts.
Strategic Approach
To mitigate hydrometeorological disasters effectively, Muhari emphasized the importance of controlling rain through weather modification operations while also preparing local communities and government bodies for any potential risks. The continuous monitoring of weather patterns, especially in light of the La Nina phenomenon, remains a top priority for disaster preparedness.
Collaborative Efforts
The BNPB allocated Rp204.9 billion (USD12 million) in 2024 for 746 flights aimed at spreading salt through weather modification operations in multiple regions across Indonesia. Muhari stressed the need for collaborative analysis and synergy with various ministries and technical institutions to streamline these operations and minimize disaster risks, including floods and landslides.
Government Support
As the orchestrator of weather modification operations, BNPB will rely on analysis provided by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to identify regional factors contributing to increased disaster potential. The Indonesian Air Force will also play a crucial role in the execution of these operations, ensuring a comprehensive approach to disaster preparedness.
