Title: Elnusa’s Plastic Bottle Exchange Machine: Revolutionizing Waste Management in Jakarta
Jakarta, January 10, 2025 – In a groundbreaking effort to tackle plastic pollution and promote environmental sustainability, PT Elnusa Tbk, a subsidiary of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, has launched an innovative Plastic Bottle Exchange Machine initiative.
The Plastic Bottle Exchange Machine Initiative
This initiative, part of the “No Plastic is Fantastic” campaign introduced during Elnusa’s 55th anniversary in 2024, aims to encourage the community to recycle plastic waste through the use of Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) and Dropboxes provided by Elnusa in collaboration with Plasticpay. The plastic waste collected through these machines is recycled by Plasticpay into environmentally friendly raw materials.
Since its inception in 2023, the program has achieved remarkable success. As of early January 2025, a total of 29,932 plastic bottles have been collected through 2,882 transactions, weighing in at 559.73 kg. The active participation of 611 individuals has generated 1,676,236 points awarded as e-wallet incentives. Through this initiative, Elnusa has managed to reduce carbon emissions by 2,963,288 grams and save 472.93 m² of land from the potential negative impacts of plastic waste.
Community Engagement and Impact
The Plastic Bottle Exchange Machines are strategically located at three key sites: Mall Grand Indonesia, Graha Elnusa, and Mall Ciputra, with an additional dropbox at Graha Elnusa. The collaboration with Plasticpay ensures that recycled plastic bottles are transformed into high-quality materials used for various innovative products like pouch bags, laptop cases, and modern tote bags.
In a city like DKI Jakarta, which generates over 8,000 tons of waste daily, with 14% of it being plastic, Elnusa’s program plays a crucial role in addressing environmental issues while promoting a circular economy that actively involves the community.
Manager of Corporate Communication at Elnusa, Jayanty Oktavia Maulina, expressed, “With the introduction of the Plastic Bottle Exchange Machines, we aim to demonstrate that environmental conservation can go hand in hand with social empowerment. We hope this program can inspire other companies to take similar steps, amplifying its positive impact.”
Expansion and Growing Participation
Elnusa plans to expand the network of these machines to reach more communities and maximize the positive impact of the program. Data indicates a significant increase in participation by the end of 2024, with the number of plastic bottles collected soaring from 1,142 in October to 6,194 in December, reflecting the public’s enthusiasm towards Elnusa’s recycling initiative.
Elnusa firmly believes that collaboration and community participation are key to creating sustainable change. Through these small steps, Elnusa aims to make a significant impact on the environment now and in the future.
