President Jokowi Celebrates Groundbreaking of Nusantara Sustainability Hub with Pertamina and Bakrie Group
Jakarta, June 5, 2024 – In an unprecedented collaboration, PT Pertamina (Persero) and Bakrie Group have joined forces to establish the Nusantara Sustainability Hub in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN). This groundbreaking initiative aims to house various research endeavors conducted by the International Institute of Sustainability Indonesia (IISI) for the development of a world-class sustainable energy research center and educational facilities.
The construction of the Nusantara Sustainability Hub commenced with the laying of the foundation stone, symbolically carried out by President Joko Widodo in the Nusantara Capital City area on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. This momentous event was attended by key figures such as Basuki Hadimuljono, Acting Head of the Nusantara Capital City Authority, Nicke Widyawati, President Director of Pertamina, Anindya Bakrie, CEO of Bakrie & Brothers, and other strategic partners.
President Joko Widodo expressed full support for partnerships with various international organizations focusing on sustainability as part of the government’s commitment to embracing collaboration in the Nusantara Capital City. This move is a testament to Indonesia’s dedication to sustainable development and green energy, signaling a shift towards economic transformation and environmental stewardship.
### Promoting Sustainable Research and Innovation
The collaboration between Pertamina and Bakrie Group encompasses the development of a shared-hub infrastructure in the strategic Edutown IKN area, along with research initiatives covering sustainability aspects. These include studies on critical minerals utilizing artificial intelligence to support the transformation of sustainable resource exploration. This partnership highlights the commitment of both Pertamina and Bakrie Group to fostering sustainable development and resource management.
### Driving Sustainable Energy Solutions
Pertamina’s subsidiary, PT Patra Jasa, is actively involved in the development of the Nusantara Sustainability Hub. Through a phased approach, Pertamina aims to enhance sustainability aspects in the IKN while establishing an internationally recognized research and innovation center focusing on sustainability and low-carbon technologies.
Nicke Widyawati emphasized that the Nusantara Sustainability Hub will serve as a platform for various initiatives, brainstorming sessions, and sustainable development involving multiple stakeholders. By promoting environmental-friendly energy solutions, Pertamina strives to create a conducive environment for optimal energy utilization in the IKN. The collaboration with the Nusantara Capital City Authority and Bakrie Group is crucial in realizing these ambitious goals.

Anindya Bakrie, CEO of Bakrie & Brothers, highlighted the partnership between Indonesia and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, which will establish the IISI as the first sustainability school in Indonesia. This institution will play a pivotal role in positioning Nusantara IKN as the Green Silicon Valley of Southeast Asia, fostering a new era of prosperity, justice, and sustainability in Indonesia.
The synergy between Pertamina and Bakrie Group, initiated through a cooperation agreement (MoU) in March, aims to create a research hub focusing on Indonesia’s strengths in decarbonization, renewable energy potential, critical minerals, and biodiversity. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both organizations to advancing sustainable solutions and driving innovation in the region.
