Breaking News: Flooding and Landslides Ravage West Sumatra
In a devastating turn of events, heavy rain-induced floods have wreaked havoc in the sub-district of Pesisir Selatan, West Sumatra. Since Friday afternoon, a total of 1,459 homes have been inundated, leaving residents grappling with the aftermath of nature’s fury.

The Pesisir Selatan Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has confirmed that the floods primarily affected four villages in the Batang Kapas sub-district. Residents in these areas found themselves submerged in floodwaters reaching depths of approximately 60 centimeters, causing widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.
Defrisiswardi, head of the agency’s emergency and logistics division, revealed that a joint team has been mobilized to provide much-needed assistance to the affected communities. Their primary objective is to evaluate the extent of the disaster’s impact and offer support to those in distress.

Apart from flooding, the relentless downpour also triggered landslides in the sub-districts of IV Jurai and Batang Kapas, exacerbating the situation. These landslides obstructed access to the Padang-Bengkulu national road, leaving it impassable for commuters and travelers.
Yuskardi, the agency’s acting head, highlighted the challenges faced by the joint team in clearing the road and restoring connectivity between Padang and Bengkulu. Despite their efforts to reopen the national road by 1 a.m. local time on Saturday, significant debris from the landslides continues to impede traffic flow.
