Enhancing Indonesia-Australia Economic Relations: Opportunities and Strategies

Jakarta (ANTARA) – In a recent meeting at the office of the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs in Jakarta, Airlangga Hartarto and Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Penny Williams, delved into initiatives to further strengthen the economic ties between Indonesia and Australia.

Shared Commitment to Economic Growth

During the meeting, Hartarto emphasized the enduring and close partnership between Indonesia and Australia, which marked 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2024. He highlighted Ambassador Williams’ instrumental role in driving the Partnership Program for the Economy (Prospera) and the Katalis business development program, both of which are aligned with the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA).

The implementation of these economic programs underscores the shared commitment of both countries to fostering harmonious relations and pursuing inclusive economic growth. The focus was on intensifying trade activities to ensure balanced and mutually beneficial trade relations.

Support at Multilateral Forums

In addition to discussions on trade, Hartarto and Williams underscored the solidarity between Indonesia and Australia at multilateral forums. Australia’s support for Indonesia’s leadership roles in the G20 in 2022, ASEAN in 2023, and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) in 2023 was acknowledged as a testament to the strong partnership between the two nations.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Hartarto expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Williams for her dedicated efforts in strengthening bilateral relations, emphasizing Australia’s strategic partnership with Indonesia, particularly in the economic and education sectors.

Looking Ahead

As Ambassador Williams nears the end of her tenure, she noted that 2025 would be a busy year for both countries. While Indonesia adapts to its new administration following the October 2024 elections, Australia is gearing up for a federal election in May. Both nations are hopeful for a lasting and closer partnership in the years to come.

The discussions between Hartarto and Williams signal a commitment to further enhancing economic cooperation between Indonesia and Australia, paving the way for a stronger and more prosperous relationship in the future.
