Efforts to Repatriate Illegal Migrant Workers Captured in Myanmar
The Minister of Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection (P2MI) Abdul Kadir Karding has been diligently working to bring back a group of undocumented migrant workers held captive in Myanmar. Currently, only two individuals have been successfully repatriated to Indonesia out of the many illegal migrant workers in distress.
Rescue and Repatriation Efforts
During a media briefing at the P2MI Ministry Office in South Jakarta on Monday (1/20/2025), Minister Karding shared that two individuals, identified as AN and JR, who were victims of human trafficking and torture in Myanmar, have been safely returned to their homeland. AN was among the five individuals whose video pleading for help went viral on TikTok, highlighting their plea to the Indonesian government for repatriation due to the alleged abuse they endured.
Minister Karding mentioned that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining four individuals, with the collaboration of the P2MI Ministry and the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Despite facing challenges, Minister Karding expressed determination to ensure the safe return of all affected individuals.
Challenges and Progress
Among those still held captive is a former member of the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) in West Java, whose identity remains undisclosed by Minister Karding. The Minister emphasized the relentless efforts being made to secure the release of all individuals, including RB, the former DPRD member. While unable to provide a specific timeline for their release, Minister Karding remains hopeful for a swift resolution to the situation.
