Legendary Indonesian Badminton Player Hendra Setiawan’s Post-Retirement Plans
Legendary Indonesian badminton player Hendra Setiawan, aged 40, has already set his sights on a new chapter in his life after hanging up his racket at the Indonesia Masters 2025. This iconic doubles player, who competed alongside Mohammad Ahsan, will be bidding farewell to the badminton world after his final matches at the ongoing Indonesia Masters tournament.
Building a Business Empire
Setiawan revealed that he plans to shift his focus towards expanding his business ventures, which have already begun to take shape. From owning a billiard hall in Bali to a restaurant in Jogja, and with plans to open a new establishment in BSD called Daddy’s Arena with Ahsan, Setiawan is determined to make his mark in the entrepreneurial world.
“Daddy’s Arena is a new venture that we have just started. It will feature badminton courts and a gym, set to open in March. The future of this project remains uncertain, but we are excited to see where it takes us,” shared Setiawan.
Prioritizing Family Time
Beyond his business endeavors, the four-time world champion expressed his desire to spend quality time with his family. Setiawan made a heartfelt promise to his children to be actively involved in their lives, including the daily routine of dropping them off and picking them up from school.
“I have made a commitment to my children to focus on them, such as being there for school drop-offs and pick-ups. My priority now is my family and my work. When I am ready to return to badminton, I will do so,” Setiawan explained.
Legacy and Recognition
Setiawan officially announced his retirement on December 3, 2024, after consulting with his partner, Ahsan. In recognition of their contributions to Indonesian badminton, the Indonesian Badminton Association (PP PBSI) has organized a ceremonial event to honor Setiawan and Ahsan. As a tribute, Setiawan and Ahsan will participate in an exhibition match titled ‘Tribute to The Daddies’ as the grand finale of the Indonesia Masters 2025 on Sunday, January 26, 2025.
This transition marks an exciting new chapter for Setiawan as he embarks on a journey of entrepreneurship and family-focused priorities, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of badminton.
