644 Residents Evacuated as Mt. Ibu Erupts: BNPB Report

Jakarta – The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has confirmed that 644 residents from West Halmahera, North Maluku, have been evacuated to ensure their safety amidst the ongoing eruption of Mount Ibu, currently classified at Level IV or Alert.

Ongoing Evacuation Efforts

According to Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, the number of evacuees is expected to rise as residents from six villages in Tabaru Sub-district, West Halmahera, continue to be relocated. The Mount Ibu Eruption Emergency Command Post has reported that hundreds of residents have already been moved to various evacuation sites.

The Tongute Sungi village hall evacuation site is now home to 22 families, totaling 56 individuals, while the Tongute Sungi Church evacuation site has accommodated 98 families, comprising 245 residents. At the Akesibu Church evacuation site, 28 families with 70 residents have found shelter.

Providing Assistance and Relief

Muhari highlighted that the BNPB is committed to offering support and ensuring the smooth operation of emergency response efforts. One of the key priorities is delivering essential supplies to the evacuation sites promptly. The government is ramping up its vehicle support to facilitate the distribution process.

Each evacuation site has been requested to submit a list of required items, which will then be fulfilled by the logistic team. This coordinated approach aims to address the needs of the affected residents effectively.

Volcanic Activity and Alert Status

The alert status of Mount Ibu was raised from Level III to Level IV on January 15 by the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). This decision was prompted by a notable increase in volcanic activity observed between January 1 and January 14, 2025.

As of the latest update on Monday, the eruption is ongoing, with the ash column reaching an average height of 1,000 meters above the volcano’s summit. Seismic activity related to the eruption has been recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 28 mm and a duration of 61 seconds at the Volcano Observation Post in Gam Ici Village, Ibu Sub-district, West Halmahera.

The local government has declared a state of emergency lasting 14 days to facilitate maximum emergency response measures, effective from January 15, 2025.

In times of crisis, the resilience and spirit of communities shine through. One resident, Maria, shared her experience of being evacuated from her home near Mount Ibu. Despite the challenging circumstances, she expressed gratitude for the support received from volunteers and emergency responders. “It’s heartwarming to see everyone coming together to help those in need during this difficult time,” Maria said.

The eruption of Mount Ibu serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable forces of nature and the importance of preparedness and swift action in safeguarding lives and livelihoods. The collective efforts of government agencies, volunteers, and affected communities are crucial in navigating through this challenging period and aiding in the recovery process.
